“Welcome to Atlanta where the playas play…and we ride on dem thangs like ev-ery day” it doesn’t matter if you’re from Atlanta or not you know the rest of these lyrics to this song. Atlanta is known as the “Black Hollywood” of the South where everyone has claimed to be a celebrity. Known for producing the hottest rappers and hits on the charts to recently being named the number one place for technology & film Atlanta is BOOMING!

One of my favorite scenes that is still growing is the Fashion scene and creative arts. Unlike the competing cities of LA and New York that already made their name in the fashion industry. Atlanta has culture about it that is uniquely different.  A mixture of that Southern Twang and Urban feel, Atlanta has hidden talent all over, and if you are paying attention it is becoming more diverse. RAGTRADE ATLANTA has created Atlanta’s very own Fashion Week. For four years now, RAGTRADE ATLANTA has given the platform for emerging designers of the to showcase their love of fashion during the month of October.

Opening the show this year was RAGTRADE ATLANTA’s “NEXT” designer Marsha Glover of NEWDE. Her models graced the runway showcasing her outerwear underwear collection inspired by her Jamaician and Asian ancestory. The crowd was taken by surprised by Muktar Onifade of VIZUVL GVDS (recent presenter at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg). His elevated streewear brand showcased female and male models, gracing the runway barefoot as a ode to his African heritage. Industry vet Tracy Nicole (winner of Belk’s 2016 Southern Designer Showcase) keep it simple and sheek with her ready to wear collection made for the everyday occasion.   Natt Taylor (winner of Belk’s 2015 Southern Designer Showcase) switched it up with a bold collection of ready to wear and evening attire. Showcases teals, purples and night black on long dresses.  Kenya Freeman of Sylvia Mollie (contestant on current season 16 of “Project Runway”) debuted her new collected entitled “Storm”. Models walked under the hip-hop track “Quiet Storm” by Mobb Deep. Her latest collection shows her growth since last year as she ended the show with thunderous claps from the audience.
