Tips on wearing color for the Summer

Updated October 2026

Spring is here and summer is right around the corner, so it’s time to update your wardrobe with color! Many people shy away from fabulous colors, but bright shades are one of the easiest ways to look fashion-forward and feel good doing it. Learning how to wear color is less about rules and more about a few simple formulas. Here are six different ways to rock color and own it, from a single pop of brightness to full color blocking.

Before you start: a quick color wheel refresher

You don’t need to be a stylist to put colors together. Two ideas from the color wheel cover most outfits:

  • Analogous colors sit next to each other on the wheel, such as fuchsia and red, or blue and green. They look harmonious and easy.
  • Complementary colors sit opposite each other, such as purple and yellow, or blue and orange. They clash on purpose and make a bold statement.

Neutrals (black, white, gray, navy, camel and denim) go with everything and give your eye somewhere to rest. Keep those three ideas in mind and every tip below gets easier.

1. Stay neutral with a pop of color

Use a pop of color to freshen up an otherwise neutral outfit. This is the easiest way to start if you usually wear black, white or denim: keep the base of the outfit neutral and add one bright piece, such as a cobalt top, a coral bag or a yellow shoe.

Try it: white jeans, a gray tee and a bright orange blazer, or an all-black outfit with a red bag.

2. Pattern play

A dress, skirt or pant in an evocative pattern serves as the focal point of your look. Pair it with a solid piece and neutral accessories for a fab look. Pull one color from the print and repeat it in your top or shoes so the outfit looks planned.

Try it: a floral midi skirt with a solid tee in one of the flower colors and simple sandals.

3. Unicolor (tonal dressing)

Pair shades of one hue together in the same outfit for an incredible fashion-forward look. Head-to-toe color in different tones, such as a pale pink top with a hot pink trouser, looks elevated and makes you look taller because the eye travels in one line.

Try it: mix textures, such as silk, knit and denim, in the same color family so a monochrome outfit has depth.

4. Color blocking

There are basically two ways to play it. Pair colors that are analogous, like fuchsia and red or blue and green, or pair colors that seemingly clash, like yellow and turquoise or purple and orange. Color blocking works best with clean, simple shapes so the colors do the talking.

Try it: limit yourself to two or three solid colors, and keep jewelry minimal.

5. Pair with matching extras

Pairing is important, and finding the right matching extra gives that fab pop! Echo one color from your outfit in a smaller accessory, such as a belt, earrings, a scarf or your lipstick, to tie everything together.

Try it: a green dress with a green clutch, or a red top with a matching red lip. Our guide to wearing a bold lip shows how to get the look.

6. Keep your accessories neutral

You can never go wrong with a neutral. When your clothes are bright, nude, tan, white, black or metallic accessories keep the look polished and let the color shine. Neutrals are often thought of as fall and spring basics, but they work just as well in summer and winter.

How to find the colors that suit you

Any color can work, but the shade you choose near your face makes the biggest difference:

  • Warm undertones glow in coral, tomato red, mustard, olive and warm turquoise.
  • Cool undertones shine in cobalt, emerald, fuchsia, lavender and blue-reds.
  • Deep skin tones look striking in saturated shades like cobalt, orange, fuchsia and emerald.
  • Not sure? Hold the color up to your face in daylight. If your skin looks brighter, it’s a winner. If a shade isn’t right near your face, wear it as a skirt, pant or shoe instead.

Build a colorful capsule wardrobe

If you want to wear more color without buying a whole new closet, start small. Pick two or three “signature” colors you love and that flatter you, then add a few pieces in each: a top, a knit and an accessory. Because the rest of your wardrobe is built on neutrals, every bright piece will work with what you already own, and you can mix your signature colors together for easy color blocking.

Wearing color for every occasion

  • Work: one bright piece with tailored neutrals, or rich jewel tones such as emerald and burgundy.
  • Weekend: play with prints, color blocking and bright sneakers.
  • Evening and events: a single-color look in a strong shade, like a red or cobalt dress, makes an entrance without trying too hard.
  • Vacation: warm corals, turquoise and white look great in the sun and photograph beautifully.

Common mistakes when wearing color

  • Too many competing brights with no neutral to balance them.
  • Busy shapes plus busy colors. Bold color looks best in simple cuts.
  • Forgetting the occasion. At work, start with one bright piece, like our work-to-play outfit ideas, and save full color blocking for the weekend.

Wearing color FAQ

What colors go together in an outfit?

Colors next to each other on the color wheel (like blue and green) always look harmonious, and colors opposite each other (like purple and yellow) make a bold statement. Neutrals go with everything.

How do I start wearing color if I usually wear black?

Keep your black base and add one bright piece, such as a top, bag or shoe. Once that feels natural, try two colors together.

Can I wear bright colors to work?

Yes. Pair one bright piece with neutrals, or choose richer jewel tones like emerald, cobalt or burgundy for a polished look.
